Rosey Grier.

July 1, 2010

I am going to start a new section dedicated to fascinating people. Rosey Grier is the first person that I have felt compelled to learn about. Rosey was one of 12 children born in NY and was named after Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He is 6 feet 5 inches and weighs 280 pounds. He played football at Penn State and then in the NFL for The New York Giants and the Los Angeles Rams for a total of 8 year and was selected as an All Pro 7 times. You would think that would be the pinnacle of his accomplishments but in my opinion after reading about him his football carer is probably the most boring portion of his life.

After his playing days Rosie explored his diverse interests including NEEDLEPOINT!!! He authored a book titled “Rosey Grier’s Needlepoint for Men” The thought of this gargantuan of a man doing needlepoint is extremely humorous to me. He also hosted a weekly TV show in LA focused on community issues, stared in several films and in 1960 he released his first of many albums and in 1968 he had a song “People Make The World” reach #128 on the Billboard chart. In that same year he worked as the personal body guard for Robert Kennedy. During the Kennedy assassination Grier subdued and wrestled away the gun from the shooter.

A true renaissance man! … and how fucking cool is that Pabst add?

I used to work a few cubicles away from Rosey’s office in South Central Los Angeles many years ago… He truly is an incredible person. His heart is bigger than he is! I remember the first time I met him, he was coming down a two-story suspended staircase in the lobby of our building, while I was sitting at the reception desk at the bottom… Made him look even BIGGER than bigger than life! Have you read his autobiography? The one I read is about 20 years old; I wonder if he’s updated it. Kudos to you for picking such a loving, humble, manly man as Rosey! Don’t let the needlepoint fool you! :-)
